Planning a Handmade Holiday

Making this Season Bright

From gift wrapping to parties, there’s always an opportunity to support independent makers, artists and Craft Councils this holiday season. The buzz of inspiration fills the air while shoppers fill their baskets with local goods. Sustainable practices and a thriving economy built by makers are the shopping experiences we love to advocate.

It’s easy to support your community by buying locally handmade fine crafts. Over the last few years, we’ve had time to reflect and adjust how we consume and buy for our loved ones. When you buy handmade, you’re purchasing an object that reflects millennia of skills passed down from generations: the candle maker brings the season’s fragrances, the potter can liven up any event with wonderful wares, and the knitters make gifts for the whole shopping list. By supporting local artists, you’re supporting the full spectrum of craft. Each local purchase economically contributes to the human history of cultural exchanges, innovation and artistic expression. We encourage shoppers to put their money where their heart is by making this, and every year, a handmade holiday.

Where Can I Buy Local Craft?

Did you know there are many ways to access handmade artwork in your neighbourhood and countrywide? Unfortunately, it might be too late to order a gift online for the holidays. However, we encourage you to visit in-person markets or purchase gift cards from local online shops like these non-profit Craft Councils. Suppose you’re wondering how to get the perfect gift for someone special. In that case, we love using this craft gift-buying guide created by CCF/FCMA member the Craft Council of British Columbia.

We’re Taking a Break

The CCF/FCMA virtual office will be on holiday from December 23rd and back at our desks starting January 3rd, 2023. We look forward to seeing you in the new year! Happy shopping and happy handmade holidays.
