Alberta Arts Flood Rebuild

The flooding in southern Alberta has left many artisans with damage to their homes, studios, equipment and offices. Calgary Arts Development will be administrating the funds raised to affected artists and government
partners from across Alberta whose focus is supporting the arts and the arts community. Suncor Energy Foundation has donated $50,000 to the campaign and another $50,000 will be given to match individual donations.

The impact of the flooding has devastated the lives of thousands of Albertans and they are now faced with a rebuild. The arts communities were among those affected by the floodwater. Many artists and arts organizations have reported damages to their venues, offices and homes. These buildings need extensive property damage restoration which is expected to have a large financial impact on the residents. There has also been a great loss of equipment and supplies that are vital for their livelihood. Canceled contracts, refunded tickets due to show cancellations, and other loss of revenue because of canceled events have all taken their toll on artists and galleries in the southern part of the province.

Albertans, including the arts community, have a resilient spirit. With devastated businesses, homes and land, the community bands together, offering help and expertise to whomever and wherever it may be needed. These efforts are greatly appreciated and needed but there is still a need for financial support. There is an estimated $3 million worth of damage to the arts sector; not including a large portion of damages and losses that have yet to be assessed.
