The CCF/FCMA is delighted to congratulate the winner of the 2014 Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts’ Saidye Bronfman Award, Sandra Brownlee. A storied weaver and book artist, Brownlee has over 40 years experience creating works on and off the loom. From her studio in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, she has exhibited her black and white wall hangings and mixed media books across the continent. Currently a part time instructor at NSCAD University, she also shared her love of craft with students in Canada, the US, Scotland, and soon, in England and Australia.
The award is a huge honour, one which comes with a $25,000 prize as well as an exhibition alongside the other seven recipients of this year’s Governor General’s Awards at the National Gallery of Canada. The official award presentation will take place at Rideau Hall in Ottawa later this month.
The CCF/FCMA congratulates Susan Brownlee on her impressive achievement, as well as our colleague, Susan Hanrahan of the Nova Scotia Designer Crafts Council, who was this year’s successful nominator. For more information on Brownlee’s work, see the Canada Council’s Award website here.
