The CCF/FCMA is pleased to congratulate artist Elisapee Ishulutaq, who was recently made a member of the Order of Canada. With a career spanning the history of craft in Pangnirtung, Ishulutaq began drawing and carving in 1970 as part of the community’s new art making program. Her drawings have provided material for Pangnirtun’s print workshop and tapestry studio for over 40 years and she continues to explore new directions in her art, now working in large scale oil stick drawings. One of 45 Order of Canada recipients, Ishulutaq was honoured at a ceremony May 7 at Rideau Hall. Celebrating her impact on both her community and nation, Ishulutaq was recognized as a pillar of Pangnirtung’s cultural history and an artist who “catalyzed a vital creative evolution in her artistic community.” Her work, mainly depicting domestic Inuit life and telling autobiographical stories, is on display in the National Gallery of Canada and was included in the 2012 Canadian Biennial in Ottawa. The CCF/FCMA congratulates Elisapee Ishulutaq on her impressive achievement, and thanks her for her contribution as a role model to young Inuit artists. For more information on Ishulutaq’s work, see the Marion Scott Gallery website here.
