Speaker Highlight: Herménégilde Chiasson

The CCF/FCMA congratulates Herménégilde Chiasson, winner of the 2011 Molson Prize, a $50,000 award given to one artist and one humanities or social scientist each year. Recognizing his “outstanding lifetime achievement and ongoing contributions to the cultural and intellectual life of Canada”, the Canada Council for the Arts awarded the prize to M. Chiasson at the opening of his play, La vieille femme près de la voie ferrée, at Théâtre L’Escaouette in Moncton, New Brunswick in April 2012.

The CCF/FCMA invites you to hear M. Chiasson speak on October 18th, 2012 at our first ever national symposium, “Hindsight/Foresight”, where he will act as the moderator in a discussion of contemporary Canadian Craft and its impact on the contemporary practices of award winning Fine Craft artists. As a playwright, poet, author, professor, visual artist and former Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick, his experience and understanding of the art world, including a deep personal interest in fine craft, will bring an interesting perspective to the symposium.

M. Chiasson’s receipt of this award adds to the many reasons we feel he is a perfect fit for this role. Alongside his 1999 Governor General’s Literary Award, the Molson Prize adds to his understanding of the effort, drive and passion artists require in order to obtain recognition, as well as his camaraderie with the other speakers (Paul Mathieu and Kye Yeon Son), each of whom are national award winners in their own fields of Fine Craft.

Join us in congratulating M. Chiasson for a lifetime of dedication to cultural appreciation and experience, and stay tuned to the CCF/FCMA website for more information about the Hindsight\Foresight event.
