Canada’s New Minister of Heritage: Shelly Glover

In the recent cabinet shuffle by the Conservative government, Canada has a new Minister of Heritage: Shelly Glover, from Winnipeg, Manitoba. She replaces the previous Minster, James Moore, who held the position since 2008. In accepting the position, Glover reflected on her humble beginnings as a Métis girl from Winnipeg, gave thanks to the Prime Minister for his belief in her and for allowing her the opportunity to enhance and help the community.

Prior to being elected in 2008, Glover served almost 20 years with the Winnipeg Police. She was one of the first participants of the first French immersion program west of Ontario, leading to her appointment as the
first bilingual female spokesperson with her police department. During her term as an elected official thus far, she has been parliamentary secretary for Official Languages, Northern Affairs, Indian Affairs and the Ministry of Finance.

The Minister of Canadian Heritage heads the Department of Canadian Heritage, a department responsible for Canada’s Arts, Culture, Communications, Sport and Media. The Heritage Minister’s responsibilities
include: the Canada Council for the Arts, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Canadian Museum of Nature, Library and Archives of Canada, Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board, National Arts Centre and National Gallery of Canada, among many others.
