Northern Scene: Shaking Stereotypes and Celebrating New Voices

Every other year for the past 10 years the National Arts Center has held a ‘scene’ event for different regions of the country, shining the spotlight on regional culture and giving credit to those who create the many facets of the Canadian experience. A decade in and it’s the Arctic’s time to shine. Northern Scene will feature more than 250 artists from the Yukon, North West Territories, Nunavut, Nunavik, Nunatsiavut including a major contingent of craft artists and artwork. Alongside music, dance, theatre and other media, northern craft artists will display their work in exclusive exhibitions, artist talks, workshops and an artist marketplace. The event will
blend the traditional and contemporary, celebrating the range of cultural experience in the vast Northern landscape of Canada. The 10 day event is an opportunity to learn about the realities of Northern life, and to appreciate the art and culture of the region. Be dazzled by ‘Boundless’, the fashion show featuring a mix of contemporary design and traditional materials and techniques, filled with beading, knitting, sealskin and qiviuk.
